Week 18: Add Keywords to Your Homepage

Updated: Jul 22

Digital Success Weekly gives you one simple step to move your online presence forward, in 30 minutes or less.

This week is about keywords. Not in a complicated, technical way. Just in a simple, practical way that can help more people find your website through Google.

What This Focus Is Really About

Think of keywords as the words that connect you to your customer.

When someone types a phrase into Google, Google scans websites to find the best match. If the words on your homepage match what people are searching for, your site is more likely to show up. If those words aren't there, Google can't make that connection.

Why This Matters

1. Google reads your website to understand what you do

Google can't watch a video of you or listen to your pitch. It reads your text. The words you use on your homepage tell Google what your business is about and who it serves.

2. Your customers are already searching for you

Right now, people are typing phrases into Google looking for exactly what you offer. Keywords help make sure your website shows up when they do.

3. You don't need to stuff your page with keywords

Natural is better. A few well-placed keywords woven into your regular writing is all you need. Google is smart enough to recognize forced or unnatural keyword use.

4. This is something you can do yourself, right now

You don't need an SEO expert to add keywords to your homepage. You just need to think about how your customers describe what they're looking for and use those words naturally in your content.

How to Find Your Keywords

Think about the phrases your customers might type into Google:

  • What service or product do they search for?

  • What problem are they trying to solve?

  • Do they include a location? (ex. "website designer in Saskatchewan")

A few examples:

  • "Wix website designer for small businesses"

  • "Digital marketing help for rural businesses"

  • "Non-profit website support"

Where to Add Keywords on Your Homepage

  • Your main headline

  • Your intro paragraph

  • Your services or offerings section

  • Your page title (the text that shows in the browser tab)

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Write for your reader first, Google second

  • Use keywords naturally. If it sounds forced, rewrite it.

  • Include your location if you serve a specific area

  • Aim for 3 to 5 relevant phrases woven throughout your page

Your Action Step

Read through your homepage. Ask yourself:

  • "Does my homepage use the words my customers would type into Google?"

  • "Is it clear what I do, who I help, and where I'm located?"

  • "Do these keywords read naturally in the text?"

If not, take 30 minutes this week to update your homepage copy with a few well-placed keywords.

Small changes to your wording can make a big difference in who finds you online.
