Week 19: Write a Meta Description for Your Homepage

Updated: Jul 22

Digital Success Weekly gives you one simple step to move your online presence forward, in 30 minutes or less.

This week is about your meta description. It's a short piece of text that most people never think about. But it shows up every time your website appears in a Google search result.

What This Focus Is Really About

Think of your meta description as your website's pitch in Google search.

When your website shows up in search results, Google displays two things: your page title and a short description underneath. That short description is your meta description. It's your one chance to convince someone to click through to your site.

Why This Matters

1. It's the first thing people read before visiting your site

Your meta description shows up before anyone clicks. If it's clear and compelling, people click. If it's missing or confusing, they scroll past.

2. It helps people know what to expect

A good meta description tells people exactly what they'll find on your page. That means the right people click through and the wrong fit moves on. That's a good outcome.

3. It affects your click-through rate

Google tracks how often people click your link in search results. A clear, relevant meta description can increase those clicks over time, which is good for your overall search ranking.

4. Most small business websites don't have one

If your meta description is blank, Google will pull random text from your page to fill the space. That text might not be clear or relevant. Writing your own puts you in control.

What a Good Meta Description Looks Like

A strong meta description:

  • Is 150 to 160 characters long

  • Describes what's on the page clearly

  • Includes one or two keywords naturally

  • Ends with a gentle call to action

Example: "Digital Success Training helps small businesses and rural entrepreneurs build a stronger online presence — one simple step at a time. Start with our free Roadmap Quiz."

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Keep it under 160 characters or Google will cut it off

  • Write it for the reader, not just for Google

  • Make it specific to your homepage, not a generic description of your business

  • In WIX, you can update your meta description under SEO Settings for each page

Your Action Step

Check your homepage meta description. In Wix, go to your homepage, click SEO Settings, and look for the meta description field. Ask yourself:

  • "Do I have a meta description written?"

  • "Does it clearly describe what my business does?"

  • "Would it make me want to click?"

If not, take 30 minutes this week to write one.

One sentence can make a real difference in whether people choose to visit your site.
