Week 20: Add Alt Text to Your Website Images

Updated: Jul 22

Digital Success Weekly gives you one simple step to move your online presence forward, in 30 minutes or less.

This week is about alt text. It's a small thing that most people skip. But it helps both Google and real people find and understand your website better.

What This Focus Is Really About

Think of alt text as describing your photos to someone who can't see them.

Alt text is a short written description of an image on your website. Google can't look at a photo the way a person can. It reads the alt text to understand what the image shows. And for visitors who use screen readers due to visual impairments, alt text is how they experience your images too.

Why This Matters

1. Google can't see your images without it

Every image on your website is invisible to Google unless you describe it with alt text. Adding descriptions helps Google understand your content and can improve how your site ranks in image searches.

2. It makes your website more accessible

Screen readers read alt text out loud for people with visual impairments. Adding alt text is a simple way to make sure everyone can experience your website fully.

3. It's one of the easiest SEO improvements you can make

Most small business websites have images with no alt text at all. Adding a few descriptions is a quick win that most competitors haven't bothered with.

4. It doesn't take long

You don't need to describe every image in detail. A short, clear phrase for each one is enough. Most websites have fewer images than you'd think.

How to Write Good Alt Text

Keep it short and descriptive. Describe what's actually in the image. Include a keyword naturally if it fits, but don't force it.

A few examples:

  • Instead of: "image1.jpg" write: "Small business owner working on a laptop"

  • Instead of: "photo.png" write: "Wix website design for a rural non-profit"

  • Instead of: "DSC00234.jpg" write: "Digital Success Training workshop in Canada"

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Keep alt text to 125 characters or fewer

  • Describe the image the way you'd describe it to someone over the phone

  • Skip decorative images that don't add meaning (leave their alt text blank)

  • In WIX, click on any image and look for the "What's in the image" or alt text field

Your Action Step

Go through the images on your homepage and About page. Ask yourself:

  • "Have I added alt text to my images?"

  • "Do the descriptions clearly say what's in each image?"

  • "Have I included a relevant keyword where it fits naturally?"

If not, take 30 minutes this week and add alt text to your most important images.

Small details like this add up. They help Google understand your site and help all of your visitors have a better experience.
