Digital Success Weekly gives you one simple step to move your online presence forward, in 30 minutes or less.
This week we're moving into a new theme: social media. And we're starting with the most important decision you'll make in this space. Not what to post. Not how often to post. But where to show up at all.
What This Focus Is Really About
Think of choosing your platform as picking your main stage.
You don't need to be everywhere. In fact, trying to be on every platform at once is one of the fastest ways to burn out and give up on social media altogether. Pick one platform, show up there consistently, and build from there.
Why This Matters
1. Your audience is already somewhere
Different platforms attract different people. If your customers are on Facebook, posting on LinkedIn won't reach them. Start where your audience already spends time.
2. Each platform requires different content
What works on Instagram doesn't always work on Facebook. What works on LinkedIn is very different from Pinterest. Focusing on one platform lets you get good at it before adding more.
3. Consistency on one platform beats scattered effort on five
One well-maintained profile is more effective than five neglected ones. It's better to show up regularly in one place than to disappear across many.
4. You can always add more platforms later
Once you have a rhythm on your main platform, expanding becomes much easier. Start simple. Build the habit. Then grow.
A Quick Guide to the Main Platforms
Facebook — Great for small businesses, local communities, and connecting with a broad age range. Works well for events, updates, and sharing blog posts.
Instagram — Visual platform, ideal for products, services, and behind-the-scenes content. Reels are a powerful way to reach new people.
LinkedIn — Best for B2B businesses, professional services, and connecting with other business owners.
Pinterest — Excellent for driving website traffic, especially for businesses with visual content, tutorials, or evergreen topics.
A Few Tips to Keep in Mind
Choose the platform where your ideal customer actually spends time
If you're not sure, ask your current customers which platforms they use most
Don't feel pressured to be on every platform
You can always revisit this decision as your business grows
Your Action Step
Think about your ideal customer. Ask yourself:
"Where does my audience spend time online?"
"Which platform do I already feel most comfortable with?"
"Which platform makes the most sense for the type of content I can create?"
Pick one platform this week and commit to it as your main focus for the next few months.
You don't need to be everywhere. You just need to show up somewhere consistently.
