Week 45: Ask for Your First (or Next) Google Review

Updated: Jul 22

Digital Success Weekly gives you one simple step to move your online presence forward, in 30 minutes or less.

This week is about Google reviews. They're one of the most powerful trust signals your business can have. And most people have far fewer than they could, simply because they never thought to ask.

What This Focus Is Really About

Think of a Google review as a public word-of-mouth referral.

When someone searches for your business on Google, your reviews are right there on the screen. Five stars and a genuine comment from a happy client can make the difference between someone clicking through to your site or scrolling past. Reviews work for you around the clock.

Why This Matters

1. Reviews build trust before someone contacts you

Most people read reviews before they reach out to a business. A handful of positive, specific reviews can be more convincing than anything on your website.

2. Reviews improve your local search ranking

Google takes reviews into account when deciding which businesses to show in local search results. More reviews, and a higher average rating, can help you show up more often.

3. Most people will leave a review if you just ask

Happy clients don't usually think to leave a review on their own. But if you ask them directly and make it easy, most people are glad to help. The ask is the missing step for most businesses.

4. One review is a start

You don't need dozens of reviews right away. One or two genuine, specific reviews is enough to start building social proof. Start there.

How to Ask for a Review

  • Ask in person after a positive experience: "It would mean a lot if you'd leave us a Google review."

  • Send a short email: "If you've been happy with our work, a quick Google review would help us so much."

  • Share your direct Google review link so it takes people straight to the review form (you can find this in your Google Business Profile)

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Ask while the experience is fresh, not weeks later

  • Make it easy by sending your direct review link

  • Don't ask for a specific number of stars or tell people what to write

  • Respond to every review you receive, positive or negative

Your Action Step

Think about one or two clients or customers who have been happy with your work. Ask yourself:

  • "Have I asked anyone for a Google review recently?"

  • "Do I have my direct Google review link ready to share?"

  • "Who could I reach out to this week and ask?"

Reach out to one person this week and ask for a review.

One genuine review is worth more than ten you never asked for.
