Week 46: Check Your Website Speed

Updated: Jul 22

Digital Success Weekly gives you one simple step to move your online presence forward, in 30 minutes or less.

This week is about your website speed. A slow website doesn't just frustrate visitors. It actively sends them away. And most small business owners have no idea how fast (or slow) their site actually is.

What This Focus Is Really About

Think of your website speed as the wait time at a drive-through.

People are willing to wait a little. But if it takes too long, they leave and go somewhere else. Research consistently shows that most visitors leave a website if it takes more than three seconds to load. Three seconds. That's not much time.

Why This Matters

1. Slow websites lose visitors before they arrive

If your pages take too long to load, visitors don't stick around to see what's there. They click away and that opportunity is gone.

2. Speed affects your Google ranking

Google considers page speed as part of how it ranks websites. A faster site can rank higher than a slower one with similar content.

3. Mobile users are especially sensitive to speed

People on phones are often on slower connections. A page that loads fine on a desktop might load very slowly on a phone. Checking speed matters for both.

4. Fixing speed issues is often simpler than you think

The most common cause of a slow website is large, uncompressed images. Fixing that alone can make a noticeable difference.

How to Check Your Website Speed

Go to pagespeed.web.dev (Google's free tool) and enter your website URL. It will give you a score for both mobile and desktop, and flag the specific issues that are slowing your site down.

Common Fixes for a Slow WIX Website

  • Compress your images before uploading them (use a free tool like TinyPNG)

  • Remove any apps or plugins you're no longer using

  • Avoid auto-playing videos on your homepage

  • Let WIX handle image optimization through its built-in tools (make sure this is turned on in your settings)

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Aim for a load time of under three seconds

  • Focus on your homepage first since it gets the most traffic

  • Don't panic if your score isn't perfect. Even small improvements matter.

  • Check your mobile score separately from your desktop score

Your Action Step

Visit pagespeed.web.dev and test your website this week. Ask yourself:

  • "How fast does my website load on mobile?"

  • "What are the biggest issues slowing it down?"

  • "Is there one quick fix I can make this week?"

Check your speed, pick one thing to improve, and make that one fix.

A faster website means more people stay long enough to find out what you offer.
