WIX Basics: What You’re Looking At (and Why It’s Not as Scary as It Seems)

Updated: Jan 10

Before you build anything in WIX, it helps to understand what you’re looking at. This quick overview will help you feel more confident navigating inside the WIX platform.

Dashboards, editors, menus, buttons everywhere ... it can feel like too much, too fast. Let’s slow this down and walk through the basics so you know:

  • what you’re looking at,

  • where things live, and

  • why Wix is actually very user-friendly.

The goal here?

  • Reduce overwhelm.

  • Build confidence.

  • Help you take the next step without fear of “wrecking something.”

Let’s take a look at the dashboard and editor in WIX.

The WIX Dashboard: Your Website’s Control Centre

Think of the WIX Dashboard as the business area of your website.

The WIX Dashboard is where you manage the business side of your site, not the design.
The WIX Dashboard is where you manage the business side of your site, not the design.

In the Dashboard, you’ll find things like:

  • Your site settings

  • Pages and menus

  • Blog posts and content

  • SEO tools

  • Forms and submissions

  • Analytics and traffic stats

  • Billing and upgrades

Keep this in mind: You don't design in the WIX dashboard. This is where you manage your website. The dashboard is where you find the forms you've created and where you can analyze where your website visitors are coming from.

The WIX Editor: Where Design Happens

The WIX Editor is where you actually see your website and where you can make visual changes to it.

The WIX Editor is where you manage the design side of your website.
The WIX Editor is where you manage the design side of your website.

This is where you:

  • Edit text

  • Change images

  • Move sections around

  • Adjust colors and fonts

  • Add buttons or sections

Keep this in mind: If you want to change the way things look on your website, you use the WIX editor.

Editor vs. Dashboard: The Simple Rule

Here’s an easy way to tell where you should be when you want to add something or make a change.

  • Does it affect how the site looks? If yes, you need the editor.

  • Does it affect how the site works or is managed? If yes, you need to be in the dashboard.

As you create and manage your website, you’ll move back and forth between these two. That's perfectly normal.

Let’s Talk About Saving (a.k.a. WIX Has Your Back)

Some of the biggest fears I hear from clients are:

  • What if I mess something up?

  • What if I delete the wrong thing?

  • What if I accidentally publish something that looks awful?”

No worries! Take a deep breath. WIX provides you with all the tools you need to face these fears.

Save, Preview, and Publish are always located in the top-right corner of the WIX Editor.
Save, Preview, and Publish are always located in the top-right corner of the WIX Editor.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • WIX auto-saves constantly

  • You can click "Save" whenever you make changes

  • You must intentionally click Publish for changes to go live

  • You can preview your site before publishing

  • WIX keeps site history, so you can roll back changes if needed

You’ll find Site History under “Site,” next to the WIX logo in the top-left corner of the Editor.

Don't be afraid to try things out. See how they look and then decide what you want to save and what you want to delete.

You’ve Got This!

Understanding what you’re looking at is half the battle. Everything feels more manageable once you know:

  • what the dashboard is for,

  • what the editor is for, and

  • how saving works.

One step at a time is all it takes. You’re already doing the hardest part ... getting started.
